CHICAGO (WGN/News Nation) — Chicago’s mayor threatened another shut down of the city’s lakefront and parks after a picture showed a lack of social distancing at a local beach.

“It’s called a pandemic, people,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot tweeted on Saturday. “This reckless behavior on Montrose Beach is what will cause us to shut down the parks and lakefront. Don’t make us take steps backwards.”

Lightfoot said in following tweets that she stopped by the beach and that the situation is being addressed.

On Friday, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced more than 2,000 new cases of coronavirus throughout the state and 21 deaths.

On Wednesday, Lightfoot announced that Chicago Public Schools would begin the school year with full remote learning. She attributed the change in plans to a recent uptick in confirmed cases of COVID-19 throughout the city.
