VIDEO: Floating fire ants, the hidden hazard in Hurricane Sally’s path

PENSACOLA, Fla. (NewsNation Now) — Hurricane Sally is not the only threat for residents living on the Gulf Coast. Besides snakes, gators and downed power lines lurking in floodwaters there’s another hazard to look out for.

Islands of fire ants have been spotted floating in floodwaters and could attack on contact – leaving painful sting-marks.

The National Weather Service in Mobile took to Twitter to warn people to stay out of the dangerous waters, “Play in the pool, NOT floodwaters!”

NewsNation affiliate WKRG videographer Jason Garcia captured the island of irritating insects at Civitian Park in Pensacola, FL.
