SAN JOSE, Calif. (NewsNation Now) — Two people are dead and multiple other people are seriously wounded following a church stabbing in San Jose, California late Sunday.

San Jose police responded to Grace Baptist Church around 8:45 p.m. following reports of a possible stabbing.

Police say on Twitter that multiple people were injured and some of the injuries are life-threatening. It was unclear exactly how many people were wounded.

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbings, police said Monday.

“We have one suspect in custody for last night’s homicide,” the San Jose Police Department said in a Twitter post, adding that more details would be released later.

According to police, no services were taking place at the time. The church was being used to bring unhoused people out of the cold.

“Our hearts are torn for the victims and their loved ones in last night’s horrific stabbing at Grace Baptist Church in Downtown — we have lost two community members,” San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said on social media. “We pray for the recovery of others seriously injured in that attack.”
