LANCASTER, Calif. (News Nation/KTLA) — An 80-year-old man was hospitalized after being beaten and robbed in the bathroom of a California grocery store, authorities said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the incident happened Wednesday morning at Superior Grocers in Lancaster, more than 40 miles north of Los Angeles.

Family members identified the man as Roberto Flores Lopez, News Nation affiliate KTLA reported.

Lopez and his wife were shopping at the store when he used the restroom, said Francisco Ordorico, Lopez’s son.

“Someone found him inside the bathroom, and he was bleeding on the floor,” said Ordorico.

The sheriff’s department said Lopez is hospitalized with several broken ribs and facial injuries.

No arrests have been made. Authorities said the incident was being investigated as a possible hate crime.
