Military aircraft crashes in California after mid-air collision during refueling

THERMAL, Calif. (NewsNation Now) — The crews of two military aircraft are reported safe after an F-35B crashed after coming in contact with another aircraft during an air-to-air refueling evolution.

The pilot of the F-35B ejected from their aircraft successfully and is currently being treated, the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing tweeted.

The crew of the other aircraft, a KC-130J, is reported safe.

The Naval Air Facility El Centro first confirmed the crash in a statement posted to Facebook:

“We were alerted to the fact that there is a report of a downed military aircraft in the vicinity of the Salton Sea. We are coordinating with the FAA, Imperial County Agencies, and CHP to determine the details. We are aware that military helicopters flying in the area are assisting at the moment.”
