Vittert: Chicago's teachers are failing their kids | On Balance with Leland Vittert

Chicago’s 340,000 kids got an unexpected day off from school on Wednesday, much to the chagrin of their parents who got the announcement at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night and had to scramble for child care amid a winter storm. Wednesday wasn't a snow day — Chicago Public Schools cancelled classes because their teachers didn't feel like coming to work. I say “feel” because it wasn't a strike or a sickout. They voted to simply stay home rather than teach in person, claiming it isn't "safe" to be in the classroom. WGN's Anna Davlantes explains who's at the heart of the issue. Could this signal a split between Democratic politicians and teachers unions? Addressing that question are the Cato Institute's Kerry McDonald and Americans for Prosperity Vice President Akash Chougule. On Balance with Leland Vittert takes a critical look at some of the day's hottest subjects.
