WUHAN, China (NewsNation) — A new video shows thousands of people attending a massive pool rave over the weekend in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the coronavirus first emerged late last year.
Large crowds packed the Wuhan Playa Maya Water Park for an electronic music festival on Saturday, according to the Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The water park reopened in June after the city gradually opened back up after a 76-day lockdown.
The video shows partygoers crammed shoulder-to-shoulder in a pool, some without masks, as they watched multiple performances.
One performer waved to the crowd in the pool; another performer on a jet board hovered above the crowd with sparks shooting from his back.
The newly released imagery stands in contrast to the safety guidelines put in place by the World Health Organizaton to help curb the spread of COVID-19.
Back in January, the Hubei province city was considered the epicenter of the coronavirus. Wuhan’s 11 million residents were placed in a lockdown, with no one being able to leave their home and all public transport was suspended.
The lockdown was lifted in April, just weeks after the virus began tearing through western Europe and the U.S.
According to AFP, there have been no new transmitted cases officially reported in the Hubei province since mid-May.
