☀ August 12: Biden and Harris appear together, mystery masks in the mail, how to sleep over in world’s last Blockbuster

[Your Morning]

Good morning! It’s Wednesday, August 12, 2020. Here’s a look at your news across the nation:

1️⃣🗳 Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden will appear for the first time with his running mate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) Wednesday afternoon in Delaware. On Tuesday, Biden announced his decision. Harris competed against the former vice president for the Democratic presidential nomination but left the race before voting began as she struggled to raise money. Why it matters: Harris made history as the first Black and Asian American woman on a major party’s presidential ticket.

2️⃣💉 With a coronavirus vaccine still months off, companies are rushing to test what may be the next best thing: drugs that deliver antibodies to fight the virus right away, without having to train the immune system to make them. Antibodies are proteins the body makes when an infection occurs; they attach to a virus and help eliminate it. Why it matters: Vaccines work by tricking the body into thinking there’s an infection so it makes antibodies and remembers how to do that if the real bug turns up. However, researchers said there are several things that could go wrong.

“A vaccine takes time to work, to force the development of antibodies. But when you give an antibody, you get immediate protection. If we can generate them in large concentrations, in big vats in an antibody factory … we can kind of bypass the immune system.”

3️⃣📬 Face masks from China are showing up – unsolicited – in Florida mailboxes. The Federal Trade Commission and Better Business Bureau say this is a scheme called brushing. Why it matters: Some unknown company could be using your likeness to boost their presence and reputation online.

4️⃣🐕‍🦺 North Carolina health officials said the state has its first confirmed case of a dog testing positive for the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans, and the dog later died. A veterinarian said they don’t know if coronavirus killed the dog. Why it matters: Health officials are still trying to figure out how easy it is for the virus to spread to animals. Two veterinarians in the state said there is a very low risk for the pets to spread coronavirus to humans.
